Foreign Ministers of member countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization held an extraordinary meeting today on August 20, dedicated to the situation in Afghanistan. At the meeting, the Republic of Croatia was represented by MFEA State Secretary, Andreja Metelko-Zgombić.

Joint concerns were expressed on the developments in Afghanistan, in particular regarding reports of violence and serious human rights violations. The Allies call for an immediate end to violence and for the safe continuation of the evacuation of NATO and partner countries along with vulnerable Afghans nationals, especially those who have supported the Alliance's and international community's efforts. It was stressed that any future government in Afghanistan will be assessed in accordance with its international obligations as well as its ability to ensure that Afghanistan does not again become a safe haven for terrorists.

In its statement, Croatia stressed that the situation in Afghanistan poses a serious humanitarian and security challenge at the regional as well as at the global level. She expressed her gratitude to Allies and partners for their support and assistance in the evacuation of Croatian citizens. Croatia has joined the calls for the protection of human rights, especially the rights of women, children and minorities.

Particular emphasis was given to the need for NATO unity and cooperation with international partners, such as the European Union and the United Nations, in addressing key challenges that could arise from the difficult circumstances on the ground in Afghanistan.
