State Secretary for Political Affairs Frano Matušić held two telephone conversations on Friday, 19 March 2021 and Wednesday, 24 March 2021 with the Chinese Ambassador to Croatia Xu Erwen regarding the decision to adopt the first package under the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime, which imposed restrictive measures on eleven individuals and four entities responsible for serious human rights violations and abuses in various countries around the world, including four individuals and one entity from China.
State Secretary Matušić emphasised that the EU Global Human Rights Sanctions Regime is not directed against any country, but has the aim of bringing about positive global changes regarding human rights, in line with EU values that Croatia as a Member State shares. He informed that the decision to adopt the package was taken unanimously by EU Member States, based on credible and legally-sound information.
He also expressed his regret that China decided to impose sanctions against EU individuals and entities who have made use of their freedom of expression. He emphasised the need to continue to discuss these issues with China, based on mutual respect and understanding. The EU is open to constructive criticism and dialogue on the human rights situation in the EU, as well as in China.
State Secretary Matušić highlighted the significance that Croatia places on improving the good and friendly bilateral relations with China, and to continue to discuss issues of mutual interest.
