Press release on the election of Mostar mayor

We welcome the successful completion of the elections and the establishment of institutions in Mostar that ended with the election of the new mayor and the formation of the new city council

We welcome the successful completion of the elections and the establishment of institutions in Mostar that ended with the election of the new mayor and the formation of the new city council. We also applaud the fact that the process has been completed in a democratic environment and in accordance with the Mostar Statute. After 12 years, the residents of Mostar had the opportunity to elect their representatives in the city authorities. The international community, together with Mostar residents, eagerly waited for this moment and attached great importance to it. We congratulate Mario Kordić, the new mayor of Mostar - Mostar is a vital city and we believe it will make an even stronger headway towards the prosperity it wants.

We also welcome the fact that the successful implementation of the local elections has also fulfilled a segment of the political agreement between Bosnian Croat and Bosniak leaders Dragan Čović and Bakir Izetbegović respectively, reached under the auspices of the international community on 17 June 2020 in Mostar. Encouraged by this success, we hope for and support the implementation of the second part of the agreement – the reform of election legislation. This will undoubtedly pave the way for the stabilization of political and social relations in Bosnia and Herzegovina, improve its functionality and accelerate the country’s journey towards the EU and NATO.
