At the second plenary session of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), held online on December 2 and 3 under the German presidency, Croatia’s nomination to take over the presidency in 2023 was unanimously endorsed. Presenting the nomination, Croatia underscored its commitment to the continued fight against anti-Semitism as well as Holocaust denial and distortion.

The main achievements of the German presidency are the adoption of a statement condemning the rehabilitation of individuals who supported committing Holocaust crimes in IHRA member countries, and the adoption of a non-legally binding working definition of “anti-Roma racism/anti-Roma discrimination”.

As an active member country of IHRA, Croatia supported the adoption of all non-legally binding working definitions on Holocaust denial and distortion, anti-Semitism and anti-Roma racism. Croatia was also the first IHRA member country to translate and publish IHRA Recommendations for Teaching and Learning about the Holocaust in the national language, presenting them at the national level.

IHRA is an intergovernmental body established in 1998, whose aim is to strengthen and promote Holocaust education, research and remembrance. It currently has 34 member countries and operates on expert-level within working groups, committees and biannual plenaries organized by the chair country. Its headquarters are in Berlin.
