On 9 May we celebrate Europe Day in commemoration of the Schuman Declaration, which led to the creation of the European Coal and Steel Community, the cornerstone of today's European Union.

Despite all the challenges and difficulties it is faced with, the European Union of today is a symbol of peace, prosperity, high standards and quality of life. The scope and consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic have highlighted the importance of the core principles which led to the European Union we know today - a Europe of unity and solidarity, joint action and mutual care.

This year's celebration of Europe Day is particularly symbolic for Croatia, as it takes place during our Council of the EU presidency, our 7th EU membership anniversary and the 30th anniversary of democratic changes in Croatia.

We are proud to have contributed directly to the European unification project and proven ourselves as a reliable partner in extremely challenging times. Through cooperation with EU institutions and other member states, we have bolstered the Union's togetherness, solidarity and resilience.

The Croatian presidency has contributed to the continuation of the legislative process within the EU and the passing of financial packages for mitigating the socioeconomic effects of the pandemic. By convening video conferences, we have enabled an innovative form of experience and information exchange between the member states on how to respond to the COVID-19 crisis and other issues.

On the occasion of Europe Day, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, in cooperation with the European Commission Representation and the European Parliament Office in Croatia, has organized a photography contest "Our Europe" to promote the geographical beauty and cultural diversity of the EU.

The European Commission Representation, with support from the Ministry, has launched the www.solidarnost.hr website, where citizens can voice their feelings, hopes and wishes, and show sympathy for each other, thus underlining what's most important right now - solidarity.

Europe Day is also an opportunity to recall Croatia's journey towards EU membership, which began with our fight for independence.

In these times of crisis, togetherness and solidarity, the guiding principles of the European project, are equally if not even more important than before.
