The International Day of Multilateralism and Diplomacy for Peace was established on 12 December 2018 through resolution A/RES/73/127 of the United Nations General Assembly.
This year's April 24 is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of international cooperation as well as the role of diplomacy in preventing conflicts and maintaining global peace.
Croatia is a strong advocate of multilateralism and since gaining independence has been an active member of a number of international organizations. In September 2019, Croatia joined the Alliance for Multilateralism, launched by Germany and France.
There are numerous issues and challenges that require a joint approach by the countries of the world, such as climate change, sustainable development, geopolitical tension, international terrorism, hybrid threats and so on. The current COVID-19 pandemic has also highlighted the importance of multilateral and diplomatic efforts in dealing with extremely complex phenomena.
In that context, Croatia joins the calls for the strengthening of multilateral action and the rule-based international system, which is a priority of the Croatian Council of the EU presidency. We have to work together on enhancing the mechanism of international organizations, especially the UN, in order to improve their efficiency and ensure our collective health, well-being, security and progress.
