The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs sent a diplomatic note to the Serbian Embassy in Zagreb, expressing protest against the unveiling of a memorial plaque to Mladen Bratić in Novi Sad. General Bratić commanded the attack by the former Yugoslav National Army (JNA) and the Serbian paramilitary on Vukovar.
The note condemns this act in the strongest terms and reiterates the expectation that Serbia and its institutions abandon the policy of relativizing and glorifying war crimes, which adds insult to injury for the victims of the aggression against Croatia. Serbia is once again urged to deal with its past and the wars it had instigated in the 1990s.
The ministry once again underscored that such decisions and actions by the Serbian government are completely unacceptable and run contrary to Croatia’s efforts to, regardless of the fact that Serbia and JNA’s aggression against Croatia took place fairly recently, build good neighbourly relations.
