Human Rights Day, 70th UDHR anniversary

The United Nation chose 10 December as the Human Rights Day to honour the 1948 adoption of the Universal Declaration on Human Rights, which for the first time in history recognized each person’s right to life, liberty and security. This year we commemorate the Declaration’s 70th anniversary.

December 10th also marks the end of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, an international campaign that begins each year with the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.

“All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights… Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of person… All are equal before the law…” – are just some of the Declaration’s principles later built into international treaties and fundamental legal acts of most of the world’s democratic countries, and are to this day providing basic guidelines for the respect of human rights.

In these challenging times, Croatia advocates the respect of the universality and indivisibility of human rights, calls for effective and indiscriminate protection of human rights in all countries, and continues to be actively committed against their violation.

As a member of key international and regional organization, Croatia bases its foreign activities on the protection of human rights of the most vulnerable social groups – children, the elderly, women, national and religious minorities, the poor, disabled and workers.

Croatia will continue to act in accordance with the principles of the Declaration, promoting equality, dignity and liberty for all, as well as full respect of civil, political, economic, social and cultural rights. We will also remain committed to fighting discrimination and poverty within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which is closely related to the goals of the Declaration, and will continue to advocate equality, dignity and liberty for all within the UN Human Rights Council.
