On 25 June Croatia celebrated the 27th anniversary of the declaration of sovereignty and independence. The Statehood Day commemorates the day when in 1991 the Croatian Parliament formally proclaimed independence with the historic Constitutional Decision on Sovereignty and Independence.
The Statehood Day was celebrated at Croatia’s diplomatic missions and consular offices worldwide. At 88 of them receptions were held during June and July which gathered numerous officials of the host country, representatives of the diplomatic corps, businesspeople and members of the Croatian community.
On all the continents and where ever Croats live, Croatian flags were hoisted and Croatian cultural heritage was promoted – through art, gastronomy and tradition. Croatian expats had the opportunity to see performances at the diplomatic missions and consular offices by various Croatian musicians of famous Croatian songs.
This year’s marking of the Statehood Day and the 5th EU membership anniversary coincided with the fantastic achievements by the Croatian soccer team at the World Cup in Russia, so receptions at the diplomatic missions and consular offices featured Croatia’s recognizable red and white squares. In numerous cities around the world public viewings were organized.
