On 22 May 1992, on the recommendation by the Security Council and by unanimous decision of the General Assembly, the Republic of Croatia became a member of the United Nations.
That act, in the midst of war and defending the sovereignty and integrity of our country, had the significance of a key diplomatic victory, which led to the global recognition of Croatia’s statehood and solidification of its international position among the community of independent and equal countries.
During the 26 years of membership, Croatia has travelled a complex road from war and aggression, a recipient of international development aid with several UN peacekeeping missions on its territory, to a territorially integrated country which became a provider of aid with its own troops in UN peacekeeping missions and operations around the world. Croatia has achieved prominent results in the UN and had the honour to participate in various prestigious UN bodies such as the Security Council, Economic and Social Council and Peacebuilding Commission, and is currently a member of the Human Rights Council.
Croatia is actively involved in all segments of the UN’s work. Our diplomats, soldiers and police officers regularly get high grades for their involvement, contributing to world’s peace and Croatia’s international reputation. One of the symbols of the UN Headquarters in New York is a bronze statue titled “Peace” by Antun Augustinčić – a gift from Croatia to the United Nations.
