Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Marija Pejčinović Burić 27 April 2018 in Brussels attended a meeting of the NATO foreign ministers. This was the last such meeting held at the old headquarters before relocation into the new.
The ministers discussed the current political and security issues that in the alliance’s focus.
In regard to Russia, NATO intends to continue with the two-track approach. Other topics included projecting stability in the southern neighbourhood, continued involvement in Afghanistan and enlargement.
The session on stability projection primarily concerned the wider region of the Middle East and Central Africa, where the alliance is continuing its ever stronger engagement in fighting terrorism and reinforcing the security and stability of the area. High Representative Mogherini also attended the session.
Concerning Afghanistan, the alliance underlined its commitment to the country’s long-term stabilization, as backed by the Resolute Support. Pejčinović Burić highlighted Croatia’s contribution to the mission, which grew even bigger this year in keeping with the mission’s priorities.
The final session focused on NATO’s open door policy and the situation in Southeast Europe. Emphasizing Croatia’s lasting support for the continuation and speeding up of Euro-Atlantic integration of our wider neighbourhood, Pejčinović Burić pointed out Bosnia and Herzegovina and Macedonia in that regard, as two NATO membership aspirants.
