Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Marija Pejčinović Burić 20 September 2017 attended the ceremonious unveiling of the “Peace” monument by Antun Augustinčić, restored by the Croatian government, and the accompanying memorial plaque, unveiled by Prime Minister Andrej Plenković. She also attended a reception for Croatia’s 25th UN membership anniversary.
The “Peace”, one of the symbols of the UN New York headquarters, was sculpted in 1954. Five and a half meters high and weighing five tonnes, it stands on a 10-meter base carved from Brač stone and was renovated earlier in the year by the Croatian government. In 2000, Croatia also donated “Girl with Lyre” by Meštrović, contributing to cultural heritage of the UN.
On Thursday, Pejčinović Burić will be present at Plenković’s address at the 72nd session of the General Assembly and the prime minister’s bilateral talks with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
Later the same day, Pejčinović Burić is to participate in a trilateral meeting of Croatian-Turkish-Bosnian foreign ministers, an informal meeting of CEI foreign ministers, a ministerial meeting on the Syrian crisis (“Building the Foundation for Justice in Syria”), a high-level meeting on “Supporting Accountability and Justice in Post-ISIL Iraq”, and a meeting of the informal network of female foreign ministers.
On the margins of the General Assembly session, Pejčinović Burić is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Algerian Foreign Minister Abdelkader Messahel and Indian Minister of State for External Affairs Shri M. J. Akbar.
