European and World Day against the Death Penalty

On the occasion of the European and World Day against the Death Penalty, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs would like to underline that Croatia advocates global abolishment of death penalty

On the occasion of the European and World Day against the Death Penalty, the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs would like to underline that Croatia advocates global abolishment of death penalty – a cruel, inhumane and degrading practice which run contrary to the need to respect the dignity and value of every person.

The UN General Assembly has adopted non-binding resolutions calling for a global moratorium on executions, with a view to eventual abolition. Despite the growing trend towards abolishment, in which a major role has been played by international and religious organizations as well as civil society representatives, capital punishment is still a part of national legislations and is still being carried out.

The Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs will continue to participate actively in the activities directed at abolishing death penalty as a cruel punishment and an unacceptable way to deprive a person of their dignity and integrity. The irreversibility of death penalty, wrongful convictions, unfair trials, classified information on executions as well as punishments against minors and pregnant women are just some of the elements which necessitate continued and determined fight for global abolishment of a punishment which stands in stark contrast to the human rights standards of the 21st century.
