The Republic of Croatia joins the international community in marking the World Humanitarian Day 19 August. The date has been designated in remembrance of the 22 UN humanitarian works that were killed in a terrorist attack on the UN headquarters in Baghdad 2003. Since then, the World Humanitarian Day is a chance to commemorate all the brave men and women who, risking their lives and safety, have dedicatedly worked on various humanitarian projects.
Killings, kidnaps and attacks are all dangers that humanitarian workers face on daily basis. During the last decade, the number of attacks on humanitarian workers has increased significantly. In 2014 alone, more than nine humanitarians were killed every month, and more than seven were victims of attacks or sustained injuries. On average, as much as ten humanitarian workers get kidnapped every day.
Violence and instability prevent the delivery of humanitarian aid to those that need it the most.
This year more than 100 million women, men and children are in dire need of humanitarian aid, while the number of people affected by wars and conflicts is at its highest since World War II. Along with that, the number of natural and manmade disasters is also rising.
The Republic of Croatia will, in accordance with its capabilities, continue to aid persons affected by humanitarian crises.
