The ATT achieves two important goals: it regulates the international trade in conventional arms and boasts a negotiating success in global arms control not seen since the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty in 1996.

The ATT is the first legally binding multilateral instrument that directly links arms control with the issues of development and respect for human rights, notably those of women and children.

The Agreement was ratified by 61 countries, including Croatia. The EU was actively involved in adopting its text and continues to support its responsible implementation as well as its spreading to as many countries as possible. The first conference of its parties is scheduled for August/September 2015 in Mexico City, with numerous civil sector representatives in attendance.
