October 24th marks the coming into force of the Charter of the United Nations and is commemorated as the United Nations Day.

The UN is a global political platform for dealing with humanity’s crucial challenges, today as well as for future generations. It is precisely during the following year, ahead of its 70th anniversary, that the UN will deal with strategic issues that will define the future of the world –new post-2015 development frameworks and climate changes.

A member state since 22 May 1992, Croatia is actively participating in a wide array of the UN activities. In the past year it has proven that with its active engagement in New York, Geneva and Vienna, as well as by co-chairing the ECOSOC and PBC, presiding over the UNDC, co-chairing the revitalization of the work of the General Assembly during its 69th session, active participation in the Open Working Group for Sustainable Development Goals and numerous other activities.

Croatia has also gained international visibility by organizing special events such as a panel discussion on the “Role of Women in Sustainable Development of Post-Conflict Societies”, led by Minister Pusić on 26 September 2014 in New York. Also, on 28 May in cooperation with Italy, as part of the ECOSOC Integration Segment, models were presented for preserving the historical heritage of Dubrovnik and Venice, cities on the UNESCO’s world heritage list.

In 2015, Croatia will continue to work on further strengthening the UN system for dealing with the current security challenges: terrorism and WMD proliferation. We will continue to advocate the strengthening of democracy, respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, as well as women’s economic empowerment, education and health protection.

Moreover, Croatia will maintain its active participation in defining new sustainable development goals, creating a universal and binding agreement on climate changes, promoting the reconstruction of post-conflict states and societies, humanitarian law and the affirmation of international judicial bodies).
