Croatia supports neighbours on their path to NATO

(Hina) Croatian Foreign and European Affairs Minister Vesna Pusić said in Brussels on Wednesday that Montenegro could receive an invitation to join NATO in approximately a year, if it meets the set conditions.

NATO foreign ministers met in Brussels for a two-day meeting, their final meeting before the summit in Wales set for early September. They talked about possibilities of NATO enlargement, namely the open door policy.

"Croatia particularly advocated progress of its neighbours, not only immediate, but of other countries in the region, because it believes it would contribute to the stabilisation of the entire region. Pusić said she expected Montenegro to make a significant progress at the NATO summit, and receive an invitation to join NATO in a year, should it meet all the conditions by then.

Pusić said Bosnia and Herzegovina failed to meet the condition, namely the issue of military property, adding however that progress could be made in terms of the activation of the membership Action Plan. Macedonia has practically met all the conditions, but its efforts to joint NATO were blocked over the name dispute with Greece, Pusić said.

A thorough and intensive plan of cooperation with NATO has been drawn up for Georgia, Pusić added.
