Croatia for more transparent arms trade

Croatia supports the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), adopted yesterday in New York by an overwhelming majority in the UN General Assembly

Croatia supports the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), adopted yesterday in New York by an overwhelming majority in the UN General Assembly. Croatia is already implementing the highest global standards in arms export control defined in the EU Common Position and believes that global implementation of the ATT will strengthen a wider control and transparency of arms trade.

The ATT was voted in favour of by 154 countries, including Croatia, and its adoption marks the end of a long negotiating process launched in 2006. The Treaty will be available for signing from 3 June at the UN headquarters in New York and will come into effect once it is ratified by 50 countries. It will regulate global trade in conventional arms, including for the first time the mechanisms of human rights protection, as well as war crimes and conflict prevention. Through a tighter system of global control, the Treaty is designed to combat illegal arms trade, which represents a major obstacle to achieving the development goals and strengthening global security.
