On Thursday 5 July 2012, the 20th session of the Human Rights Council saw the adoption of the Conscientious Objection to Military Service resolution, initiated and proposed by the Republic of Croatia. This is the first such initiative that Croatia in cooperation with Poland and Costa Rica has presented to the UN body responsible for the protection and promotion of human rights.

The adoption put this important human rights issue on the Council’s agenda in order to spark a discussion among the UN member states about conscientious objection to military service.

The resolution received wide support from countries around the globe, including most of the EU partners.
