The meeting was held to discuss the current situation in the southern Mediterranean and in the Near East, piracy and the battle against terrorism.

At a press conference held after the meeting, European Union High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security Catherine Ashton emphasized the great importance of the relations between the European Union and the Gulf countries, as seen in the meeting held, which showed how important it is to “strengthen the foundations of joint dialogue on all the topics of discussion”. She added that both sides will work together towards developing plans to make “relations even more strategic and dynamic”. She stressed that the European Union appreciates the work of the Gulf Cooperation Council in the battle against terrorism, and wishes to work with the Council to increase cooperation in that area, and to prevent violent extremism, and to foster cooperation at the UN level. “Deeper cooperation also means an open and sincere discussion on issues that we might have differing opinions on”, said High Representative Ashton.

Chairman of the Gulf Cooperation Council Saudi Prince Al Faisal also advocated continuing dialogue and made special comment of the current situation in Syria, stressing that it is important to stop the regime that is systematically destroying its own citizens, and he advocated that arms supply to the regime be halted.
