Cyprus has thus become the eighth EU member to complete the process of ratification of Croatia's Accession Treaty. In the three months since Croatia's EU entry vote, the process of ratification of its Accession Treaty has been completed by all three EU member-countries covered by the Croatian Embassy in Rome – Italy, Malta and Cyprus.

Ambassador Tomislav Vidošević 1-3 May was on a working visit to Cyprus, where he met with Parliament Speaker Yiannakis Omirou and Averof Neofytou, chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Cyprus-Croatia Friendship Group. He attended the ratification session as a special guest.

The Cypriot officials expressed satisfaction with Croatia’s pending EU entry, as well as the fact that Cyprus was among the first to ratify its Accession Treaty, while the Croatian ambassador once again thanked Cyprus for its continued support to Croatia’s accession. He underlined the significance of the ratification in view of Cypriot EU presidency in the latter half of this year. Also discussed were the possibilities of further cooperation, namely within the European Union’s Mediterranean Dimension.

Vidošević also held talks with the Cypriot Foreign Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Petros Eftychiou and Diplomatic Advisor to the President Marios Ieronimidis. The Croatian ambassador said that the two countries’ cooperation would gain a wider dimension once Croatia entered the EU, namely in regard to cooperation in the Mediterranean. The Cypriot officials said they were pleased Croatia, a friendly country, was joining the EU. Views were then exchanged on the current financial and economic crisis that had hit the eurozone.

Ambassador Vidošević visited yesterday Kykkos Monastery and met with Abbot Aghathonicos Kykkodis, who familiarized him with the monastery’s rich sacral art heritage.
