Pusić attended EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Luxembourg

The meeting focused on the latest developments in Myanmar following the 1 April elections

The meeting, chaired by High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, focused on the latest developments in Myanmar following the 1 April elections, in Afghanistan and in the countries from the Sahel region. Also discussed was the Middle East peace process and Iran’s nuclear program.

Speaking about the situation in Afghanistan, Pusić said Croatia was helping to secure stabilisation of the country which the NATO-lead ISAF mission is scheduled to leave in late 2014. She added that Croatia was included in civil development projects such as equipping girls' schools, and was also launching a project aimed at educating midwives in Croatia who would then be employed in Afghanistan.

In regard to Syria, the minister said Croatia was prepared to take part in the implementation of the plan of the UN and the Arab League envoy, Kofi Annan, which foresees the deployment of military, unarmed observers in Syria. She stressed it was very important for Croatia to be present in Syria once the situation stabilised, namely in view of continuing the economic cooperation.

Pusić said Croatia supported the EU Foreign Affairs Council’s decision to impose new sanctions on the Syrian regime and suspend most of its sanctions against Myanmar, except the arms embargo, in recognition of democratic reforms. She underscored the importance of the activities of human rights NGOs in the country.

On the fringes of the meeting, Pusić held several talks with foreign ministers of the EU members.
