Pusić participated in 19th session of UN Human Rights Council in Geneva

Pusić recalled the wrapping up of EU negotiations and Croatia’s experience in state building and society transformation, including the area of human rights

This was Croatia’s first attendance since gaining the status of an EU acceding country. In her speech, Pusić recalled the wrapping up of EU negotiations and Croatia’s experience in state building and society transformation, including the area of human rights.

Speaking of the state of human rights in the world, Pusić condemned the escalation of violence in Syria and called for putting an end to the repression against the Syrian people. She also highlighted the need for consolidating the human rights and democratic institutions in Libya and other countries of North Africa, stressing Croatia’s vast experience in post-conflict reconstruction and institution building.

Pusić pointed out Myanmar as an example of how individuals struggling for human rights can indeed bring about wide-reaching social changes.

She also emphasized the importance of protecting the rights of children, girls and women, notably the right to education as a universal test of society’s potential to effectively guarantee human rights.

The minister then touched on the discrimination against LGBT persons and called for heightened attention to this type of discrimination. In that regard, she pointed out the progress, as well as the still existing issues in Croatia.

Conclusively, Pusić stressed that human rights violations occurred in every society and should be paid constant attention to. That said, she pointed out the uncompleted tasks in Croatia, but confirmed the strong commitment to further advancement of human rights on the national level.
