The two officials expressed satisfaction with the excellent bilateral relations, realized in no small part thanks to the populous Croatian community, which acts as a strong link between the two countries. An important role in mutual relations is also played by multilateral cooperation and dialogue on global issues, in which Croatia and Australia successfully cooperate as well.

Ambassador Mercer congratulated Minister Pusić on her appointment, expressing belief in the continuation of the excellent cooperation, especially in light of the fact that this year marks the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Croatia and Australia. She also said she was pleased with the positive outcome at the Croatia’s EU accession referendum, expressing hope that Croatia’s joining the EU would open up additional opportunities for cooperation with Australia.

Pusić informed Mercer about further steps on the road to EU membership, namely the Parliament’s ratification of the Accession Treaty and the appointment of Croatia’s members-observers to the European Parliament. She also told her about her participation in this week’s meeting of the EU foreign ministers, the first time Croatia has been represented as an observer country. In that regard, she emphasized the importance of Croatia’s Euro-integration experience for the rest of the Southeast European countries, as well as the experience in post-conflict institutional reconstruction for countries of the south Mediterranean.

Also discussed was the further development of cooperation between Croatia and Australia in science, technology and tourism, given that last year more than 80,000 Australian tourists visited Croatia.
