The meeting discussed the security environment in South Eastern Europe, cooperation as a guarantee of regional security, NATO’s open-door policy, public support for membership and the rationalization of defence funds.

Director Vidiš described the security situation in South Eastern Europe as satisfactory, but warned about the flashpoints such as Kosovo. He said that NATO was aware of its responsibility towards the membership-aspiring countries in the region and expressed belief that their Euro-Atlantic aspirations would be appropriately evaluated at NATO’s Chicago Summit the following year.

The US-Adriatic Charter was signed in May 2003 in Tirana for the purposes of preparing Croatia, Macedonia and Albania for their NATO membership. Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro joined the Charter in December 2008.
