Newly-built elementary school, part of Croatia’s development assistance to Afghanistan, handed over to Homaro Faroq community

The project was launched during Minister Jandroković’s participation in last year’s International Conference on Afghanistan held in Kabul, when he also visited members of the Croatian ISAF contingent. The project was coordinated and realized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration, in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence.

The construction of the school in the village of Homaro Faroq on the outskirts of Mazar-e-Sharif was based on the Croatian Government’s initiative in response to the needs expressed by the local community and the Afghan Ministry of Education. The purpose of the project was to provide elementary education to as many children as possible, in a facility that has five classrooms and all the other necessary amenities, to be used by 250 children from Homaro Faroq and the nearby Afghan villages.

Homaro Faroq has a population of over 5,000, mainly returnees from the neighbouring countries. Until now, the area had no schools, and classes were being held in three tents that served as classrooms.

The ceremonious handover saw the presence of Croatian Ambassador to Turkey and Non-Resident Ambassador to Afghanistan Dražen Hrastić, Colonel Mario Samobolec, commander of the Croatian forces in north Afghanistan, and deputy civil representative of the Feyzabad Provincial Reconstruction Team Hrvoje Ćurić Hrvatinić, as well as members of the local community, who expressed gratitude to Croatia, saying that the school would give a whole new meaning to the education of their children.

Ambassador Hrastić presented the day before in Kabul the school handover letter to Afghan Foreign Minister Zalmai Rassoul, and is scheduled to present it to Education Minister Farooq Wardak as well.
