Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Gordan Jandroković participated in 4th UN Conference on Least Developed Countries

The conference reviewed the results of the 10-year action plan for the least developed countries, adopted at the previous conference held 2001 in Brussels

The conference reviewed the results of the 10-year action plan for the least developed countries, adopted at the previous conference held 2001 in Brussels. It also discussed the newest measures and strategies for the sustainable development of the least developed countries in the following decade.

In his presentation, Minister Jandroković expressed satisfaction over the holding of the conference, saying it represented continuation of the global efforts to speed up the overall socio-political development of the least developed countries.

He advocated that the efforts be strengthened, since the situation in many countries has not improved despite all the measures, but has deteriorated even further. Furthermore, the number of the least developed countries in the last 40 years, since the setting up of this group, has doubled and there are now 48 of them.

Minister Jandroković pointed out that assistance could be efficient only if it was followed by all-encompassing social democratic reforms aimed at strengthening the institutions of authority, the rule of law and the respect of human rights.

He remarked on the various UN, EU and NATO peacekeeping and peacebuilding missions in which Croatian military and civil personnel is taking part, and added that Croatia’s intent was to continuously on an annual level increase the overall amount of development aid. In regard to the least developed countries, special attention will be paid to educational and health programs.

In the morning, Minister Jandroković also gave an interview for the Turkish CNN about the final stages of Croatia’s EU negotiations, and will hold a series of bilateral meetings in the afternoon with the EU members’ ministers.
