Minister Jandroković thanked EPP Group Vice-Chair Hökmark for his strong and continuous support for Croatia along its road to full-fledged EU membership

Minister Jandroković thanked EPP Group Vice-Chair Hökmark for his strong and continuous support for Croatia along its road to full-fledged EU membership.

Mentioning this year’s Croatia Progress Report, he pointed out that it clearly confirmed all of the achievements so far and apart from providing a framework for the remaining obligations, gave a strong encouragement for future activities. He expressed satisfaction with the European Commission’s estimate that Croatia’s negotiations had entered its final phase, pointing out that Croatia’s goal was to close the negotiations in the first half of 2011 and then sign the Accession Treaty. He also said he expected the European Parliament to give a timely assent to Croatia’s Accession Treaty once Croatia closed the negotiations.

The meeting also discussed the Croatian public’s support for joining the EU. Minister Jandroković informed EPP Group Vice-Chair Hökmark about the latest poll results, according to which, if the referendum were to be held today, 65% of the voters would support Croatia’s joining the EU.

EPP Group Vice-Chair Hökmark reiterated his firm support for the completion of Croatia’s negotiation process, adding that its successful completion and Croatia’s EU membership would send a strong message to the other countries in the region.

The collocutors also exchanged opinions about the situation in South Eastern Europe, expressing support for the Euro-Atlantic integration processes of all the remaining countries that satisfied the required criteria. They agreed that the Euro-Atlantic perspective was of the utmost importance for the building of peace and stability in Europe’s southeast.
