MFAEI held seminar entitled “Managing European Affairs – the Belgian Experience”

In his opening remarks, State Secretary for European Integration Andrej Plenković said that Croatia had entered the final stage of the EU membership negotiations, pointing out the necessity for all of the state administration bodies to familiarize themselves with the workings and decision-making procedures of the EU institutions

In his opening remarks, State Secretary for European Integration Andrej Plenković said that Croatia had entered the final stage of the EU membership negotiations, pointing out the necessity for all of the state administration bodies to familiarize themselves with the workings and decision-making procedures of the EU institutions. He stressed the importance of the MFAEI’s coordinating role in the horizontal linking of all of the relevant ministries in regard to the European issues. Belgian Ambassador to Croatia Marc de Schoutheete de Tervarent communicated Belgium’s support for Croatia’s membership, while Head of the Competition Department of the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Trade and Development Cooperation Evert Maréchal talked about Belgium’s experiences.

The part of the seminar dedicated to the decision-making process in the EU explained the structure of decision making on the EU-wide level, the decision making in the Council, and the role of the Permanent Representation of the Kingdom of Belgium in the EU. Maréchal also talked about Belgium as a federal country with different levels of decision making, the national procedure of technical consultations, and the role of the Directorate for European Affairs and Coordination of the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The seminar saw the participation of 70 odd representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration and other state administration bodies.
