State Secretary Andrej Plenković received the Ambassador of the Republic of Portugal to Croatia, Paulo Tiago Fernandes Jerónimo da Silva

Having assessed the bilateral relations between the two countries as very good and without any open issues, the two officials opened the topic of Croatian accession to the European Union membership. On that occasion, Ambassador da Silva emphasised that Portugal strongly supported Croatia on its path towards the Union membership.

State Secretary Plenković informed Ambassador da Silva about the future activities that the Republic of Croatia needs to undertake in this area, especially those related to informing the Croatian Public about the European Union, the referendum on accession to the Union, the signature of the Treaty of Accession, and activities that will follow after entry into the European Union membership.

On the basis of Portuguese experiences, Ambassador da Silva emphasised the importance of sound preparations of a Country for membership and the advantages of using the European Union Funds. In that context, State Secretary Plenković pointed out that the Republic of Croatia is among rare countries which have so far used more than 90% of the European Union pre-accession funds.

At the meeting, they also discussed the economic situation in both countries, and the Union for the Mediterranean ministerial meeting on the environment that will take place on 21 and 22 April in Dubrovnik.
