State Secretary Božinović pointed out the insufficiently recognized role women play in both the process of political decision-making and the implementation of international security measures though peacekeeping operation, building trust and conducting negotiations. Women leaders are lending a significant contribution to world peace and security primarily through persistence, thoroughness and a special talent for consensus-building.

In regard to the status of women and the possibility of their professional development within the security and defence system, he emphasized the fact that Croatia has the largest percentage of women in armed forces in relation to the other NATO members’ armies. That said, we are fully aware of the need for further, continuous work on creating suitable conditions for women to realize their personal and professional potential, not only in the security and defence sector, but in the society as a whole, said State Secretary Božinović.

The goal of the “Women and Security” symposium is to highlight the importance the women of South Eastern Europe have in the decision-making process, preventing conflicts, maintaining peace and post-conflict reconstruction. It was organized as a multidisciplinary platform for a discussion on the security challenges in South Eastern Europe among the participants from both the governmental and non-governmental circles.

The symposium also marks the 10th anniversary of the Security Council’s Resolution 1325 “Women, Peace and Security”, which represents the fundamental document on the effects and consequences war has on women, as well as their contribution to sustainable peace.
