State Secretary Davor Božinović met with Director General of the Directorate General for Translation of the European Commission Karl - Johan Lönnroth

Since the start of the negotiations for full EU membership, Croatia has intensively worked on translating the acquis communautaire to the Croatian language. This demanding project, which is the largest translation project in the Republic of Croatia to date, takes place within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration.

During the talks, the collocutors discussed the current progress of the translation of the acquis communautaire to Croatian that will become one of the official EU languages after Croatia’s accession to the Union. Following the foregoing, every Croatian citizen will have guaranteed access to EU regulations in the Croatian language.

State Secretary pointed out that thus far Croatia has translated more than 85 percent of the EU acquis, and it has uploaded more than 107 247 pages of documents to the European Commission’s database. The Director General of DG Translation praised the Ministry for its work and they agreed on further steps and cooperation between the relevant services of the European Commission and Croatia.

Director General Lönnroth reported about the preparations undertaken by DG Translation of the European Commission to examine and verify the Croatian translation of the acquis communautaire by lawyers linguists with knowledge of Croatian, and he drew attention to the need for continuous education of the future Croatian translators who will work in the European Union institutions.
