British Columbia’s Ministry of Education introduced Croatian language in 5-12 grade curriculum

The students in British Columbia will now be able to learn the Croatian language as an optional course, on a par with all other courses

The students in British Columbia will now be able to learn the Croatian language as an optional course, on a par with all other courses.

Since education in Canada is regulated provincially, the status of the Croatian language is being resolved by each province individually. After the Ontario province had included the Croatian language in its curriculum, in 2005 the Canadian-Croatian Congress launched the process in British Columbia as well. Thanks to the Congress’ efforts, and with the support from the Croatian Embassy in Ottawa, the province’s ministry has introduced the Croatian language as part of the elementary and high-school curriculum.

The Croatian teachers were invited to prepare the curriculum by next semester, for which there is great interest on part of the 18.815-strong Croatian community and other citizens of British Columbia.

This represents yet another confirmation of the Croatian language and identity, the Croatian community in Canada and the new partnership Croatia-Canada political framework.
