The workshop is a part of the UNODC 2009-2011 Regional Programme on promoting the rule of law and human security in South Eastern Europe, which the Republic of Croatia joined at the regional conference in March 2009.

The goal of the workshop is to determine the status of the implementation of the Regional Programme’s first phase, present the examples of good practice and the needs of forensic research institutions, as well as define the long-term goals and activities in this part of the Programme. Croatia is willing to transfer its knowledge and technical assistance to other countries and realize the education of Croatian experts in European forensic laboratories. Apart from the experts from the UNODC Laboratory and Scientific Section, the workshop gathered experts from the institutes for forensic research and analysis from Zagreb, Rijeka, Split and Osijek, as well as representatives from six countries of South Eastern Europe.

Apart from forensics, other areas of cooperation within the UNODC Regional Programme in which the Croatian public administration bodies are participating include border safety, combating human trafficking, developing instruments of monitoring the penal and justice system, suppressing money laundering, cooperation in penal matters, the return of illegally-acquired property, fighting corruption, treating and preventing drug use.
