In the first stage, in June 2009, 24 beehives with bees and apiarist equipment were bought for the beekeepers’ cooperative in the village of Ahburia, with a view to supporting alternative sources of income to the production of opium poppy.
Within the framework of the long-term Croatian Support Plan to the Afghan National Development Strategy, in 2008 the Republic of Croatia donated USD 50,000 as aid for the programme “Food for Education”, which is being implemented in Afghanistan by the International Food Organization. With the same amount Croatia helped the implementation of the second consecutive presidential election in Afghanistan in 2009, through the UN Development Programme. At the moment, the construction of the basic health centre in the village of Layoba in Feyzabad District, which is also sponsored by the Republic of Croatia, is entering its final stage.
In the territory of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan there are 28 Provincial Reconstruction Teams. They are headed by the members of the NATO ISAF mission, and their task is to provide help in the implementation of the Afghan Development Strategy.
As of 2005, the Croatian Team Feyzabad has been operational as part of the German PRT in Badakhshan Province. Heads of the Croatian Team are at the same time deputy heads of the civilian section of PRT Feyzabad.
