MFAEI hosted meeting familiarizing interested representatives of Croatian construction companies with business opportunities in Iraq

The meeting was led by the Head of the Special Mission of the Republic of Croatia to the Republic of Iraq, Ambassador Jerko Vukas, and saw the participation of representatives from some 15 Croatian construction companies and the Croatian Chamber of Economy.

Ambassador Vukas expressed satisfaction with Croatian businessmen’s interest in doing business in Iraq, pointing out that, owing to past positive experiences, Croatian companies are welcome on the Iraqi market. Saying that it is in the Ministry’s interest to develop a maximally efficient economic diplomacy, he informed the businessmen about the current political and security situation in Iraq, as well as about the procedures for doing business and applying to tenders. For the purposes of better connecting Croatian and Iraqi businessmen, an economic forum is to be held in April next year in Croatia that will present the two countries’ economies and the potentials for further cooperation.

Right now, Croatian companies are present in Iraq namely in the construction sector, energy, oil industry, and mine action, with numerous possibilities for new businesses in the construction of homes and infrastructure facilities, railway network reconstruction, repair of damaged pipelines and energy transfer equipment, as well as in food and pharmaceutical industry.

Also participating in the meeting was the economic advisor at the Croatian Special Mission and Head of the Croatian House of Commerce in Erbil, Jasim Daher, who pointed out that the goal of this institution, founded last year and gathering eight Croatian companies, is to promote the overall Croatian economy in cooperation with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration and the Special Mission of the Republic of Croatia to Iraq. So the economic cooperation could be further enhanced, three new houses of commerce might be opened in Baghdad, Basra and Najaf.
