The opening speeches, as well as the ensuing discussion, confirm the importance of understanding Croatia’s Mediterranean dimension and orientation in its international positioning. Having always belonged to the Mediterranean space geographically, culturally and historically, Croatia is now gradually assuming its place within the political, economic and security initiatives as well. In that regard, Union for the Mediterranean Coordinator Malenica presented the past achievements and announced future coordinated activities within the Union, stimulating further deliberation and study of the Mediterranean development and foreign-policy discourse in Croatia.
Croatia and the Mediterranean – the Geopolitical Aspects is a work that analyzes the realities and drawbacks of the region’s geopolitical position and determines the existing and potential geopolitical, geostrategic, geotransport, energy and military-security factors which affect Croatia’s geopolitical role and positioning within all of the regional initiatives. The book contributes to a better understanding of the Mediterranean as a region, Croatia’s role in it, and geopolitics at large. It represents a relevant contribution to the collection of expert literature available to the Croatian foreign affairs service, as well as to the academic community and general public. The book was published end-2008 by the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration.
