Minister Jandroković received Nalin Surie, Indian Government’s special envoy

Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Gordan Jandroković received today Nalin Surie, a special envoy of the Indian prime minister. Special envoy Surie is visiting Croatia as a part of seeking support for the signing of the Agreement between IAEA and India on the Implementation of Security Measures in Using Nuclear Energy for Civil Purposes. The Agreement will allow the IAEA and its inspectors to monitor Indian civil nuclear facilities

Special envoy Surie pointed out the global importance of using nuclear energy for civil purposes, stressing India’s growing economic and social needs in that regard. He handed a letter by the Indian prime minister, asking for Croatia’s support for the signing of said Agreement. The pointed out that India, as one of the IAEA founders, has in the past 50 years proven its dedication to a peaceful and transparent use of nuclear energy.

Minister Jandroković showed understanding for India’s motives and need, saying that Croatia would support the signing of the Agreement between the IAEA and India, to be decided upon by the IAEA Board of Governors on 1 August 2008. He pointed out that Croatia supports this Agreement as yet another step towards the strengthening of international control over nuclear and radiological material, as well as the overall nuclear safety.

The meeting also noted the traditionally good and friendly relations between the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of India.
