Minister Jandroković described the visit by Minister Delegate Schmit as a strong element of the continuous and very good co-operation and another proof of friendship between the two countries. Both sides confirmed that in such a spirit and unburdened by outstanding issues, the relations between Croatia and Luxembourg have an excellent perspective for further development. Croatia appreciates Luxembourg’s support for its EU and NATO membership, especially in the accession process, said Minister Jandroković.
Speaking about the EU accession, Minister Jandroković presented Croatia’s goal to close the negotiations in 2009 and confirmed that Croatia is aware that 2008 is a crucial year in meeting the criteria and conducting the necessary reforms. Minister Delegate Schmit confirmed that concrete dates are being mentioned for the first time and communicated Luxembourg’s positions that that is a realistic possibility if the existing negotiation rhythm continues.
As for bilateral assistance, it was pointed out that it is with considerable means (nearly €1 million) that Luxembourg is assisting Croatia in mine action. Co-operation with the Luxembourgian Government in assistance programs concerning the transfer of knowledge and experience in banking, finance, insurance, justice and administration was also described as valuable.
Talking about economic co-operation, Minister Jandroković said that Croatia is very satisfied with Luxembourg’s direct investment (amounting to approx. €1 billion in the past 15 years), placing it 6th among the investors. Trade has also considerably grown – USD 16 million in 2007, which is a 17% increase in relation to 2006, with the Croatian export exceeding 15%. Minister Jandroković reported an increased interest in tourist visits from Luxembourg, the number of which in 2007 grew by 15% in relation to the year before.
Minister Delegate Schmit was also received by State Secretary for European Integration Željko Kuprešak, reviewing certain topics concerning Croatia’s EU accession.
