Minister Gordan Jandroković received on official visit Canadian Foreign Minister Maxime Bernier

Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Gordan Jandroković received 19 May 2008 on official visit Canadian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maxime Bernier. This first official visit by a Canadian foreign affairs minister has a special importance for Croatia

Minister Jandroković stated with satisfaction that the relations between the two countries have never been better, expressing conviction that Minister Bernier’s visit would also contribute to their further development. The two ministers also reviewed the possibility of further deepening the political, military and economic co-operation.

Solving the issue of the additional form for Croatian citizens, which had to be filled out when applying for visa, Minister Jandroković described as very important, as it opened up new possibilities of developing economic co-operation and tourism. He also pointed out that the possibility of cancelling visas for Croatian citizens would additionally contribute to the development of bilateral relations, which was also discussed during the meeting.

Minister Jandroković also noted that the trade between Croatia and Canada in 2007 totalled USD 72.4 million, and that 40,000 Canadian citizens, unencumbered by visa regime, visited Croatia last year.

He also said Croatia expects a further strengthening of the two countries’ economic relations based on partnership, as well as an increase of Canadian investment in Croatia. In that regard, he especially commended the Greenfield investment such as the Caristrap of Quebec in Mihovljan.

Speaking about the Euro-Atlantic integration, Minister Jandroković informed his Canadian counterpart about Croatia’s achievements in the past period – receiving the NATO membership invitation, closure of NATO accession negotiations, and the progress of the EU accession process. In that regard, he thanked Minister Bernier for Canada’s strong support for Croatia’s NATO aspirations, expressing hope for a soon ratification of the Accession Protocol in the Canadian Parliament.

Minister Bernier stated that Canada wishes to carry on developing and enhancing the bilateral relations, and will continue to support Croatia on its way towards NATO. As regards visas, he said he is glad the additional form for Croatian citizens was cancelled and that Canada is open for further co-operation in that regards.

The two ministers also reviewed the situation in South Eastern Europe and exchanged opinions about the current state of events in Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Kosovo.
