Minister Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović received Iraqi MP Alu Talabani and coordinator in non-governmental organization National Democratic Institute for International Affairs Areez Abdulmahdi

Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović received on Monday, 23 April 2007 an MP in the parliament of the Republic of Iraq Alu Talabani and the coordinator in the non-governmental organization National Democratic Institute for International Affairs Areez Abdulmahdi

The visit of the Iraqi delegation to the Republic of Croatia was organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration as part of assistance in development to the Republic of Iraq and in accordance with the policy of cooperation in development of the Republic of Croatia, led by desire to strengthen democracy and rule of law and to promote protection of fundamental human rights and freedoms.

During their visit to the Republic of Croatia, the members of the Iraqi delegation will meet representatives of government bodies, local government and self-government, non-governmental organizations, and representatives of the diplomatic corps to the Republic of Croatia. They will also learn about Croatian experience in the field of human rights protection, particularly mechanisms for women's and minorities' rights protection, antidiscrimination legislation of the Republic of Croatia, and the role of non-governmental organizations in this field.

Besides the meeting with the Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration Grabar-Kitarović, a meeting of the members of the delegation with the Deputy Speaker of the Croatian Parliament Đurđa Adlešić, Deputy Prime Minister and the Minister of the Family, Veterans and Intergenerational Solidarity Jadranka Kosor, and the president of UN Committee on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) Dubravka Šimonović. The Iraqi delegation will also meet Heads of Government Offices for human rights, national minorities, and gender equality, Ombudsman for children, representatives of the diplomatic corps to Croatia as well as representatives of non-governmental organizations Center for Women War Victims, Women's Room, and CESI.

Members of the Iraqi delegation started their visit to Croatia by visiting Vukovar and Vinkovci where they met with representatives of the local government and self-government and non-governmental organizations that exist in the area, with a goal to learn about Croatia's experience in the field of reconstruction and post-war reintegration.
