Speaking about Croatia’s accession to full EU membership, President Mesić said that the accession negotiations are progressing at a satisfactory pace, pointing out the importance of informing the Croatian citizens about what does the EU membership mean for each segment of the society. In that regard, President Mesić said that NATO requires a broad public debate and informing to clear up the public’s misconceptions regarding the Alliance.
President Mesić stressed that full support to the UN must remain a constant in the Croatian foreign policy, bearing in mind the necessary reforms the UN and its bodies need to carry out in order to keep abreast of the modern-day circumstances and global events. He emphasized that international terrorism is the world’s biggest problem and pointed out the need for the eradication of its causes.
In his speech, President Mesić also stressed the economic aspect of Croatia’s foreign policy as one of the priority components in the relations with other countries, both those neighbouring and globally with those in whom Croatia can realise it economic interests.
This lecture is the fifth time in a row that President Mesić appeared as a guest speaker at the Diplomatic Academy’s One-Year Professional Diplomatic Study.
