State Secretary for European Integration Marija Pejčinović Burić participated at the 12th European Forum in Berlin, organized by the BMW Foundation Herbert Quandt on December 1 – 2, 2006. The Forum focused Europe's responsibilities in the world and expectations by different neighbouring regions
State Secretary Pejčinović Burić spoke at the panel entitled European Union as a global political factor with special focus on South East Europe. The subject of her speech was European Union as a factor of transformations in Europe – obligations to South East Europe. State Secretary discussed the process of European integration in South East Europe as framework and motivation factor for shaping of home politics of countries included in the Stabilization and Association Process. South East European countries are at different stages of the process of approaching EU which is based on individual achievements of each country, said State Secretary, also adding that the Republic of Croatia has been internationally recognized as leader, not only in the process of accession to the Euro Atlantic community, but also in activities directed towards strengthening regional collaboration, solving the remaining open bilateral issues and helping other countries concerning Euro Atlantic integration.
State Secretary Pejčinović Burić said that the Republic of Croatia holds the EU debate on the institutional framework reform necessary and that the Republic of Croatia wished to join a dynamic and efficient Union. European Union can not be complete without its South East countries as members.
The panel speakers were also Martti Ahtisaari, Special Envoy for Future Status Process for Kosovo and Erhard Busek, Special Co-ordinator of the Stability Pact for South Eastern Europe.
The European Forum in Berlin is a Pan-European conference in the round table form where senior officials from politics, academics, economy and media discuss current economic and political issues.
