Minister Grabar-Kitarović took part at the ministers’ meeting of the Community of Democracies

Foreign Affairs and European Integration Minister Kolinda Grabar-Kitarović, taking part at the 60th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, participated yesterday, 19 September 2005, at the ministers’ meeting of the Community of Democracies, at which she held a speech emphasizing the importance of the meeting for the UN and multilateral relations in general

In her speech, Minister Grabar-Kitarović said that she firmly believes that supporting the highest democratic standards, the rule of law and respect for human rights can make the world a better place. In that regard, it is necessary to support those principles in the work of the UN to strengthen collective security and ensure that all people live in dignity and prosperity.

Minister Grabar-Kitarović also met yesterday with the U. S. Under-Secretary of State for Democracy and Global Issues, Paula Dobriansky, with whom she discussed bilateral issues and topics regarding the Euro-Atlantic integrations, as well as Croatia’s role in and contribution to the Community of Democracies.

The two also spoke about the initiatives and programs Croatia is developing jointly with the U. S. to promote and spread freedom and democracy. Under-Secretary of State Paula Dobriansky said she appreciates Croatia’s contribution to and its active role in the Community of Democracies, as well as its contribution to the Democratic fund, adding that she thinks Croatia can play an active and important role in South Eastern Europe, promoting the Community’s goals.

At the end of the meeting, Minister Grabar-Kitarović said that Croatia wants to work with the U. S. on common values that united the Community of Democracies as an international coalition of states whose purpose is to promote democratic principles and consolidate democratic institutions worldwide.
