The lines in the right apex of the lower, bigger square are not connected and symbolise the Republic of Croatia's openness to the European Union. They also lead into the coin's ring, inside of which there are twelve stars, symbols of the European Union, interwoven with three lines, the Croatian interlacing-ribbon pattern, which points to the Republic of Croatia's intention to become an EU member country. In the middle, next to the lower edge, the date June 18, 2005 is stressed, delimited with a square on the left side and with a star on the right. An added piece to the date is a text which reads: "The Republic of Croatia – an EU candidate country" and which closes the circle on the coin.
