The Croatian Diplomacy Day is traditionally celebrated on June 7, because on that day, in 879, Pope John VIII sent the Croatian Prince Branimir a letter informing him that in Rome he had blessed him and the whole Croatian people, acknowledging his "worldly power over the whole Croatia". In this way, using today's vocabulary, Croatia was granted sovereignty and acknowledged as an independent country. This was the highest possible international recognition at the time because the Pope was both the chief church and secular authority.
