ITALO-CROATIAN POLITICAL CONSULTATIONS
Rome, 17 February 2005
JOINT STATEMENT

Croatian delegation led by State Secretary Hido Biščević met today with Minister Gianfranco Fini and State Secretary Roberto Antonione. After discussing the matters of general and bilateral concern, they agreed upon the following points:

Bilateral contacts will be intensified during 2005 in order to advance the process of further improving good neighbourly relations, friendship and co-operation. They shall endeavour to establish a strategic partnership based on their deep-rooted historical, cultural and social links.

Italy appreciated the efforts carried out by Croatia in meeting the European standards and supports Zagreb’s endeavour to join the European Union in view of the launching of accession negotiations, in full compliance with the criteria set by the European Union. Both parties consider the process of Euro-Atlantic integration of the countries of South Eastern Europe as the most effective vehicle for achieving stability and prosperity in the region as a whole.

Specific methods for dealing with the issues of bilateral concern have also been agreed upon, within the framework of effective rule of law. The parties agreed that the solutions and measures to be elaborated will be non-discriminatory and based on transparent legal grounds, will represent the principle of pacta sunt servanda and will be guided by our common European vision. The parties look forward to solving all pending bilateral issues. The Joint Commission established in 2002 will intensify its activities.

Italy and Croatia recognise that the Adriatic is their common heritage. They will enhance their co-operation in all sectors, inter alia through environmental protection, transport, trade and investments, tourism, maritime security and safety.

It was also agreed that technical working groups will be established to tackle specific issues such as access to real estate markets (in line with SAA provisions), matters related to cemeteries, archives and cultural goods. The working groups will start meeting in the immediate future.
