Croatian Ministry of Foreign Affairs expresses on behalf of the Croatian government its utmost concern regarding the renewal of ethnic violence in Kosovo between the Serbian and Albanian community

In a time of intensified violence, terrorism and threats to peace and stability of international relations, especially in Europe lately, each new outbreak of violence and extremism is cause for special concern and calls for a swift and determinate action on part of the international community. In that regard, Croatia shares the EU’s concern expressed in statements by the EU High Representative for the CFSP Javier Solana and President of the EU Council of Ministers Brian Cowen, and would like to join the appeal for calming the situation down and the continuation of the political dialogue. Croatia firmly believes in the necessity for a quick renewal of a political dialogue on Kosovo in accordance with the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council and the UNMIK mandate. In the interest of preserving the peace and stability in the region, Croatia believes in the need for an immediate intensification of the international community’s efforts in restoring peace and stability, creating conditions for a political solution of the crisis and a timely neutralisation of possible negative consequences the situation on Kosovo might have on the peace and security in the immediate neighbourhood. Croatia thinks that the quickened consolidation and democratic stabilisation of relations in Serbia and Montenegro, the continuation of Europe-oriented reforms in Macedonia, the preservation of stability and the upgrading of inner political system in Bosnia and Herzegovina also present a wider framework for peace in this part of Europe in the coming period. Southeast Europe is at an important turning point – chances for a historical breakthrough towards European standards and Euro-Atlantic integrations meet with unresolved national, political and other issues. It is Croatia’s firm belief that solutions and answers to these issues need to be sought in a peaceful way and in the spirit of the new European idea, as confirmed by the 2003 Thessaloniki Declaration. As a part of the international community, Croatia is ready to contribute fully to the stabilisation and the establishing of a permanent peace in this part of Europe.
