Croatian citizens travelling to Italy to carefully guard their personal documents...

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Croatia warns Croatian citizens travelling to Italy to carefully guard their personal documents and to strictly respect the traffic regulations in the Italian Republic. This warning is based on the information of the Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia in Trieste.

The Consulate General of the Republic of Croatia in Trieste has lately noted a worrying increase in the number of losses, thefts and even wrenching away personal documents (passports and IDs) , to which Croatian citizens sometimes contribute by being rather careless.

The Consulate General in Trieste notes an increased number of Croatian citizens coming to the Consulate General whom the competent Italian authorities took away their driver’s licences on account of the transgression of traffic rules, and there were even some cases of temporary seizure of vehicles. Recently, Italian authorities have been strictly implementing the provisions of the new Traffic Act which in addition to what has been mentioned above envisages high fines for drunk driving and speeding (several thousand euros).Since Italian traffic regulations do not provide for urgent proceedings with regard to foreign nationals, the procedure for the return of licences is rather long.
