Croatian MFA wants to confirm that Mr. Solana has declared his readiness to assist Croatia and Slovenia in settling the issue of demarcation at sea...

In connection with the article in Croatian daily newspapers about the alleged offer of the High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU, Javier Solana, to act as a mediator or arbiter in the context of the demarcation at sea between Croatia and Slovenia, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Croatia wants to confirm that Solana, as a connoisseur of the region and of the states of relations between the two states, has declared his readiness to assist Croatia and Slovenia in settling the issue of demarcation at sea through a dialogue.

The Ministry notes that the allegations from the media mentioned, according to which the High Representative for Common Foreign and Security Policy of the EU expressed his readiness to take over the role of a mediator or arbiter between the two states in order to settle the issue in question, are false.

The Republic of Croatia highly appreciates the activity of Javier Solana, particularly regarding his rich experience and knowledge of the region, as well as his support for Croatia's approach to the European integration processes, and welcomes the activities and the contribution of the High Representative to settling the open issues between the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Slovenia.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs welcomes all the efforts and activities aimed at settling all open issues between the Republic of Croatia and the Republic of Slovenia, including the delimitation at sea. Settling these issues, fully in accordance with international law, is one of the basic aims of the foreign policy of the Republic of Croatia, as has been shown on more than one occasion in its international activities.
